My thoughts on the issues dealt with here have been formed in large measure over the last two decades of teaching at the University of Colorado and watching the education of my children (who have not been shy in reporting on their experiences). As to questions of curriculum organization and learning assessment, I have learned much from my ongoing collaboration with Kathy Garvin-Doxas and Isidoros Doxas, although it goes without saying that the more inflammatory comments here are totally of my own devising. Our work on the Biology Concept Inventory (http://bioliteracy.net) is supported by the National Science Foundation.
